NERIA

Neria

Neria oh

Osaore Moyoka Neria

Mwari anewe…

I was moved the very first time I heard the song from the departed legend, Oliver Mtukudzi. It is a powerful that will invoke emotions even in the strongest of hearts. Apparently, Neria is a film made in 1993 in Zimbabwe. The film was such a success, that is recorded to be the highest scoring film in Zimbabwe’s rich history.

Written by novelist Tsitsi Dangarembga, screen written by Louise Riber and directed by Godwin Mawuru, Neria is about the struggles of a widowed woman in Harare, Zimbabwe. Her brother-in- law takes advantage of the situation to take over the inheritance for own benefit, at the expense o the woman and her 2 children.

Oliver Mtukudzi sung the sound track of the film, and to date remains one of the most celebrated songs in Zimbabwe. Oliver did a lot of justice to the song with hos vocals, guitar and prowess in the unique genre the song features.

Here are the lyrics to the song in Shona, and English translation (in brackets)
